Husbands, continue loving your wives… A man who loves his wife loves himself,

for no man ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cherishes it…

On the other hand, the wife should have deep respect for her husband.

Ephesians 5:25-29, 33

This advice for husbands and wives is not just helpful words. It’s psychologically sound counsel from the Originator of marriage, the  Designer of the human race. Who better to ask about the invention than the Inventor? There’s a lovely scripture that says, “Taste and see that Jehovah is good.” (Psalm 34:8) How do you know what something tastes like? So try out this counsel for yourself and see what you think.

What I find fascinating about it is that wives are not counselled to love their husbands. In a wonderful Bible discourse on marriage that I remember from many years ago, the speaker made the point that women are naturally good at being loving. They also deeply appreciate feeling loved and cherished by their husbands. Do you feel that way? Do you feel that your husband could maybe improve his skills in that area? Then you’ll appreciate the scriptural advice given to him in the Bible!

After that discourse on marriage, myself and one of my girlfriends had a conversation with a man who was new to studying the Bible. He said he would love to follow that advice, but didn’t know what he could do to make his wife feel loved. We looked at each other and then chorused, “We’ll make you a list!” Because of course, as women we know how we would like to be treated, what translates to us as FEELING loved.

The blinding realization for us as women was, well then, what about us? Jehovah’s counsel for us is to show respect to our husbands. So we were able to ask in our turn for the male perspective. Over the next few days, myself and my friend asked several happily married men what translates to them as FEELING respected. The answers were very interesting. It was a real eye-opener to me, and showed me that we as women can benefit just as much as we know that men can benefit from the counsel given to them. I trust Jehovah’s advice with all my heart, but the specifics of it in this instance really, really impressed me.

I couldn’t think of a card design that would incorporate this scripture, so I came up with the idea of two printable pictures, His n Hers. These could be printed out and framed and might make a nice little wedding present. Alternatively, you could incorporate them into a Double Gatefold Card. (just do a Google Image search using that term and you’ll see what I mean)Double 5x7in Frame (1)
