Reside Forever: 5×7″ Card and Picture

December 8, 2010

“The righteous themselves will possess the earth,

and they will reside forever upon it.”

Psalm 37:29

As we saw in the last post, Adam and Eve were told in Genesis 2:16,17 that if they ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, they would die. What do you therefore reason would have happened if they had been obedient? They would not have died! Everlasting life was what Jehovah had purposed for them – and us. Some people feel that the Garden of Eden account is a metaphor or a parable. One of the reasons for this may be that the account of the tree of the knowledge of good and bad and of the tree of life seem mythical.

The account doesn’t teach that the trees themselves had any supernatural powers of their own. Rather, they were actual trees that Jehovah invested with symbolic meaning. For example, a judge may warn someone against being in contempt of court. It is not the furniture or the walls of the courtroom that the judge wants to protect from disrespect but the system of justice that the court represents.

What, then, did the trees symbolize? The tree of the knowledge of good and bad represented a privilege that is God’s province alone – the right to determine what is good and what is bad. The tree of life represented a gift that only God can bestow – everlasting life.

If you would like to read more about this, please go to the Watchtower official site, go down to the bottom of the page and click on Publication Downloads. You are looking for the Watchtower of January 1, 2011. If this one is not displaying, click on the “More Magazines” link, use the dropdown menu to choose the date and then choose this magazine, “The Garden of Eden – Myth or Fact”.

The good news is that through the ransom we can still choose everlasting life. We have the opportunity to learn about Jehovah’s standards and we can choose loyal obedience and gain the free gift of life – forever.
