Lazarus Awake: A6

October 12, 2010

“Lazarus our friend has gone to rest, but I am journeying there to awaken him from sleep.”

The disciples…imagined Jesus was speaking about taking rest in sleep.

At that time, therefore, Jesus said to them outspokenly: “Lazarus has died.”

John 11:11-13

Jesus helps us to understand what happens when a person dies through the example of his friend, Lazarus, who got sick and died. He compared death to rest and sleep. Lazarus was neither in heaven or hell, nor was he having any other experiences. He was at rest, sleeping as though in a deep, dreamless sleep. When he was resurrected by Jesus after four days in the tomb, he “awoke” again.
